Name cards – Thoughts by Charu Srivastava

I was fascinated with name cards as a kid. Name cards seemed so grown up and official and cool! I used to dream of the day when I would be important enough to have my very own name cards.

Soon enough I held in my hands my precious name cards. I felt so proud seeing my name and title printed on those cards. I used to look forward to exchanging name cards and diligently maintained a name card file (yup a physical folder of all the name cards I had received). This was pre LinkedIn and WhatsApp so name cards were the easy way to connect.

The novelty of name cards soon wore off. It was painful to keep track of the cards I received. It was most painful trying to find the correct card when I needed to contact someone. Juggling a stack of name cards, food and drinks at events was never fun too!

The worst feeling was when I was left with loads of, many times entire unopened boxes, of unused cards each time I was issued with new ones. This happened often and for multiple reasons including company rebranding, new jobs and promotions.

COVID quickly added to my doubts about using name cards. As networking moved online, the ingrained practise of name card exchange came to an absolute stop. Who knew we could use technology, esp LinkedIn, to connect with people? 😏

Ever since then I have been against paper name cards from a cost, waste and user experience perspective.

Luckily, one of the perks of being a #founder is being able to make #meaningful decisions aligned with your values. It makes me really happy that TriOn & Co has adopted NFC enabled One Good Card for all our name card needs.

It is a simple change but one that is good for business and the environment. I still get to see my name printed and am able to update my details seamlessly. My contact information can also be easily saved by the other person without the need for inefficient data saving from physical cards. Most importantly, no more waste of resources for repeated printing.
